Journalists have a problem with sex
and, for once, it is not what you might think.

This week newspapers have covered nominees and awards for the Nobel Prize. The Twitter and the Facebook have gone crazy when it has been noticed that if the candidate, or winner, is a man, the title reports name and surname. When it comes to a woman, the titles is more generic and recites: "a woman appointed for" or "two women get the Nobel price". No name, no surname. A woman. Sometimes she is referred to as a mother, or even worse "the Thelma and Louise" of science. Yes, a famous national Italian newspaper has used the parallel with two rebels that commit suicide to talk about Ms Doudna and Chevalier who won the Nobel Price for the technique that allows to rewrite the genome.
|
I see you know, nodding and smiling and thinking: well, if being a woman, a mother, a sister, a coworker AND a scientist is not a suicidal activity in our society, I do not know what it is. But that is not the point. Words are important and so is a name. You pay respect by calling someone with their name and surname. Can we please pay more attention when we publish the news?

More about Italy
And no, the sexist controversy is not over.

When they went to a famous Italian department store to buy the school dress for their kids, Italian parents found out that school dresses producers...ops did it again! In fact, the uniforms for boys have drawing square and pencil, while those for girls have lipstick and red lips.

The message is clear: since we are little, boys are doomed to become engineer, scientists (with a name and surname!), inventors. Girls can learn how to wear make up and be sensual. In the future they can become the wife of, or the mother of. One more times, the name won't matter and the circle is closed.
|
Words are important and so are pinafores, t-shirts, toys, colours, but it seems that in Italy, on media and in department stores, the journey is still long and full of obstacles.

Few things about Covid-19
How is the pandemic going there? Yesterday, here in Italy, we woke up with a new set of rules. The most important one is that now it is mandatory to wear masks everywhere, day and night. The curve of infections is rising again, and we all fear another lockdown. In case you need the newest guidelines or any update, here is the official website of the Ministry of Health in English.

More about Campania (where to eat) especially Positano should be on the blog next week. But I am also thinking about some little guides to make the life here easier. If you have special requests, do not hesitate to reply to this email.

Take a slow Sunday morning, a friend, a lot of gossip and go to Galleria Umberto I if you are in Torino. But if you are here to shop at the Market of Porta Palazzo, or for a business meeting, it works as well.

The first time I saw Besnik Harizaj it was in a shape of a Testa di Moro, in an Instagram story. I made a little research to find the craftsman and I immediately stumbled upon one name: Besnik Harizaj.
