Vico Equense: 5 places to eat in the Naples gulf

7 December 2020 by Lori Leave a Comment

Vico Equense is village that stretches along the Naples coast, in a convenient position to discover the area. It is less known than Positano and Sorrento, and generally attended by locals, so the prices here are much lower than in the most famous destinations.

Whether you are visiting Naples, taking a trip to Capri, or visiting Positano and Sorrento, Vico Equense is an interesting stop to eat, sleep or lie on the beach. Since you might consider it for few days or even for few hours, here are the restaurants I have tried.

1. Da Gigino: The University of Pizza

Also known as University of Pizza, Da Gigino is a pizzeria restaurant famous for pizza al metro, a meter of pizza. You can order a meter or half meter of pizza and decide several toppings to share with family and friends. You can also find pasta, meat and fish, of course.

The place is really big and renowned therefore I recommend you to book in advance. In summer, ask to be seated outside.

I ate here two times and noticed that the organization is not perfect. I had to wait for the dishes, for extra water, even if the restaurant was not crowded.

I tried both pizza and fish. The fish was not welled prepared, the fried fish didn’t have a perfect golden crust and it lacked of salt. The pizza was good but to be honest not the best I ate here. The ingredients were in any case fresh. For me it is a good 6/7, less than I expected since this pizzeria is a famous landmark of Vico Equense.

2. La Salumeria, a deli-bistrot in the heart of Vico

This half deli and half bistrot is the real surprise of Vico Equense. La Salumeria is in Vico’s main square, Piazza Umberto I and has small tables outside. It serves salads, hamburgers and cold cuts paired with a good selection of beers and wines. The value for money is fantastic. Here you can eat with 15 euros or less. The quality is incredible and the atmosphere is super cool. It is a 10 for me.

3. Ma che bontà, you home far from home

If you are looking for a place that feels like home far from home, this is probably the best one in the area. You will find the most traditional dishes served with great care. And during Covid pandemic this was certainly the restaurant with the highest level of control on the dishes.

Do not expect a fancy environment, here the food is at the centre. So indulge in fresh fish, crocchè, vegetables, spaghetti with seafood and deliscious deserts.

Located in Corso Caulino 9, a bit far from the centre, I had problems to reach it since I didn’t have a car and finding a cab was impossible. I told the restaurant owner and they sent me a car to pick me and my friends. So for me it’s a 10++++ for the food and the kindness.

4. Sporting beach: restaurant with a view

This hotel and beach club has a restaurant at the level of the street and a bar bistrot on the beach. Located in Corso Filangieri 120, you can access the beach and rent bed and parasol by descending with a spectacular lift that opens right in front of the sea.

I ate at the beach bar which features several dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients and fresh food. The dishes are well prepared and the fish was super fresh but I think it was a bit expensive especially for the small portions. It is a 7 for me but it would have been a good ten if it had a good value for money.

5. Gabriele Gelateria, for sweets lovers

This Gelateria in Corso Umberto I, is right in the centre of Vico Equense. It is famous for its ice-cream and desserts, but it also sells dairy products. In summer the line outside is very long, but since they are quite fast, you won’t wait a lot. You can dine with a sumptuous ice-cream with the cone covered with nut grains and topped with whipped cream or buy a mozzarella to eat at home if you have rented. house.

I tried this Gelateria several times. The sweets are a bit small for the price if compare to others in the surrounding and the ice-cream is good but not the best I have ever tasted. It is a good 7 for me. Maybe, in winter with less people the quality is higher.
